The 2017 Spy Valley Hand Picked Single Estate Marlborough Gewürztraminer has won gold at the New World Wine Awards.

In its 16th year the New World Wine Awards uses the same internationally recognized 100 point scale as other leading wine competitions. This show is unique in its focus on affordability and availability of the wines entered, and the results are eagerly anticipated by consumers each year. The competition focuses on commercially available wines from New Zealand and overseas that retail under $25. Judging took place in Wellington over 31 July to 2 August by an independent panel of 16 international judges. In total there were 1,407 wines judged and there were a total of 81 (5.75%) gold medals awarded.

Spy Valley has a strong reputation for consistently producing award winning Gewürztraminer, winning their first trophy in 2002 at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Since then picking up multiple national and international awards including the Sydney International Wine Competition, London International Wines and Spirits Competition and the San Francisco International Wine Competition.

“Vintage 2017 was a challenge for sure. The weather leading into harvest was great, and all varieties looked good with less stress from the drought conditions leading into 2015 and 2016. As harvest progressed there were several rain events that caused disease pressure and forced some of the blocks to be picked earlier than they otherwise would have been. Surprisingly we felt little pressure with the aromatic varieties. Gewürztraminer looked great with good acid retention.” Paul Bourgeois, Spy Valley’s chief winemaker.

He describes the bouquet as possessing ‘Mango, ginger, nutmeg and rose petal notes.’ The palate has ‘powerful fruit flavours support a smooth flowing structure that lingers in the mouth.’

Although deliciously fruity when young, there is structure to give the option of cellaring for several years. The optimum suggested drinking window would be from 1-5 years after harvest.
