Penfolds has a rich history dating back to 1844 when Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold arrived in Australia with a vine cutting and a bold vision. They purchased 500 acres of land in South Australia and began producing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. Christopher's planting of vines and his philosophies continue to influence Penfolds to this day. Mary Penfold, the unsung chief of Penfolds, played a significant role in the winery's experimentations, growth and winemaking philosophies. Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker in 1948 and created the long-lasting Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. The tradition of 'bin wines' began in 1959 with Kalimna Bin 28 becoming the first official Penfolds Bin number wine. Penfolds continues to innovate, with the release of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon in 2012 and the 170th anniversary celebration in 2014. Today, Penfolds remains one of Australia's most famed and respected winemakers, driven by generations of visionaries and innovators who strive for excellence in winemaking.
Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz 2021 is a masterful wine matured for 18 months in French oak (29% new) and American oak (29% new) hogsheads and large puncheons. The growing season leading up to this vintage had some challenges, with winter rainfall 20% below the long-term average due to low rainfall experienced in July. However, August contributed to healthy soil moisture levels and spring temperatures were slightly warmer than average with excellent climactic conditions for budburst and flowering. The wine has a dark purple core with a ruby rim, an incredible sight to behold. To experience the full aroma, a generous decant is encouraged. The first thing that stands out is the dark, purple fruits: fresh satsuma plums and blackcurrant, with sweet notes of cinnamon fruit bun. Preserved plum jam and quince paste aromatics add to the allure. There are exotic notes from the spice cupboard: juniper berries, dried rosemary, sweet paprika and bay leaves, redolent of Spanish tapas like patatas bravas, duck paté, and cured jamon. The minerality of the Shiraz is apparent, with a hydrocarbon/coal dust note providing a regional cue and infused with ironstone/limestone minerality. On the palate, the wine is beautifully balanced, with sweet and savory nuances in perfect harmony. The wine has a sweet/tart plum succulence, with crème brûlée and pannacotta creaminess adding weight to the palate. It also evokes childhood memories of humbug confectionery. The tannins are fine and chalky, perhaps influenced by Marananga’s ironstone and limestone rich soils. Interestingly minerality is apparent, with a fine steely, cranberry-like acidity holding court, enhancing the wine's structure. This wine is serviceable now, but it will continue to develop its flavor profile until 2050, making it an essential addition to any wine collection. Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz 2021 is an ideal wine for wine enthusiasts who enjoy the balance between sweet and savory, complexity, minerality, and acidity.
Beautifully concentrated wine with complex dark chocolate, blackberry, espresso flavours, fine grainy/ graphite tannins and well- integrated mocha, marzipan oak notes, Finishes cedar firm and minerally. Still oak dominant but well matched to the fruit density. Should develop very well. - Andrew Caillard MW, 96 Points
