Oban has a sweet, peated nose with nuances of burnt heather, carried through to the palate with just a touch of creaminess. The distillery is in the town of Oban, taking water from Loch Gleann a'Bhearraidh. The water is as fresh as a daisy, a daisy with a hint of peat that is. Ground, malted Barley is washed with heated water that is fermented producing a rough beer, this is distilled twice in pot stills to give spirit. Oban is released after 14 years ageing in old Bourbon casks, the point at which the softness added by the casks compliments the spirit's gentle salty peatiness.

Oban 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is one of those whiskies that quietly earns respect rather than demanding attention.
From the first pour, it strikes a balance that’s hard to fault. The nose opens with gentle coastal notes—think sea breeze and a touch of salt—layered with citrus, honey, and a light malt sweetness. There’s a subtle smokiness, but it stays in the background rather than dominating.
On the palate, it’s smooth and medium-bodied. You get a mix of orange peel, dried fruit, and toffee, followed by a faint peppery spice. The coastal character comes through again, giving it a slightly briny edge that keeps things interesting without being overpowering. The integration is where it shines—nothing feels out of place.
The finish is clean and moderately long, with lingering oak, soft smoke, and a hint of sweetness.
It sits in a nice middle ground stylistically—not as heavily peated as Islay whiskies, but more complex than many lighter Highland malts. That makes it a strong all-rounder: approachable for someone newer to single malts, but still nuanced enough for more experienced drinkers.
If there’s a drawback, it’s that it plays things a bit safe. It won’t blow your mind, but it’s consistently good.
Verdict: A well-balanced, coastal Highland whisky that prioritizes elegance over intensity. Reliable, refined, and easy to come back to.
