Akvavit is a flavoured spirit that is principally produced in Scandinavia, where it has been produced since the 15th century. Akvavit gets its distinctive flavour from spices and herbs, and the main spice should be caraway or dill. Aquavit is an important part of Scandinavian drinking culture, where it is often drunk during festive gatherings, such as Christmas dinners and weddings. In Sweden, Denmark and Germany aquavit is cooled down and often sipped slowly from a small shot glass. This is usually attributed to tradition. In Norway where most of the aquavit is matured in oak casks (pre sherry), the drink is at room temperature and served in tulip-shaped glasses or shot glasses. Aquavit arguably complements dark beer well, and its consumption is very often preceded by a swig of beer. Some drink beer after a sip of aquavit, but purists generally lament this practice, claiming the beer will ruin the flavour and aftertaste."

Snaps/Akvavit

The well known Danish Cold Table which include a variety of pickled herrings and also a selection of cheeses for the open sandwiches simply cannot be offered without shots of the Akvavit from Aalborg, also known as Red Aalborg flavoured with Caraway seeds. There are also a number of lesser wellknown varieties e.g. Jubilee brand a smoother version flavoured with Dill. Whichever your choice can also be served as a cocktail Snaps and Lemonade e.g. Have fun.

Aalborg Taffel Akavit

Scots and Irish traditionay drink whisky. The English drink gin. The French drink cognac. The Italians drink grappa, the Greeks drink raki. Etc, etc.

The favoured spirit of the Scandinavians, like that of all Teutonic people, is snapps. Of those, my favourites are the superb Norwegian Linie (also sold by Whisky and More) and the Danish Aalborg Akavit range.

Taffel is their basic offering. "Taffel" is Danish for table, so the brand name classifies it as their basic or table variety. I was introduced to it by my Danish bride of fifty-seven years. Since then I've discovered the premium variety Jubilleums and the Christmas special Julesnapps. Julesnapps sold in a crafted Holmgaard glass bottle. The Julesnapps flavour resembles the Norwegian Linie.

While the premium varieties are really great, my heart still is with the basic Taffel. It is the first snapps taste that I acquired, and I delight in it still. Akavit snaps can be thought of as a gin variety. The aromatics used are caraway at the forefront, rounded by supporting herbal, aniseed, citrus, and spice. It's best stored at minus 18 c in the freezer, served in small shot glasses, and quaffed as soon as it's poured.

It's damn good. Besides, it is the drink that our guests and ourselves quaffed in the toast at our wedding, way back in 1968. It doesn't get any better than that.

Skal!
