To the north of Islay and Jura is the world's second largest whirlpool, the famous Corryvreckan. This thunderous, seething cauldron is named after the Viking Prince Breacan, who apparently met his watery end there, proving his devotion to the daughter of the Lord of the Isles.

Nose: Swirl the glass for torrents of tarry creosote. A collision of dark chocolate, blackcurrants and muscovado is followed by a burst of cherries and pine needles. With water, cayenne peppered steak surfaces with cloves and blueberries. A heady mix of treacle, menthol and chilli sauce follows.

Taste: The first plunge is deep, peppery and chewy with crispy seaweed. Descend deeper and a mouthful of espresso coffee coats the palate with rich melted dark fruits and star anise.

Finish: Long, deep and powerful into the finish, with black coffee, chocolate coated cherries and hot pepper sauce.

Intense smoke, salty and sweet

This whisky may not be my cup of tea, but I know it’s a favourite for many others. It has an intense smokiness, with a character that complements it well. On the nose, it reminds me of the inside of a tyre or a freshly tarred road. On the palate, it is sweet with a touch of salt, reminiscent of salted caramel, caramelised bacon, or black treacle. The finish is decently long and combines both the aromas and the flavours really well.

Personally, the smokiness and flavour profile put me off, but I can certainly recognise the quality and craftsmanship behind it, which is why I still give it a 5. All I can say is that if you enjoy salty-sweet flavours, intense smoke, and a high ABV, this is the whisky for you.

Amazing

I'm no connoisseur, but this whiskey is beautiful. Smooth, sweet, salty, and smoky first impressions. For the alcohol content it doesn't burn, and the salted caramel flavour aftertaste lingers. No one else gets to share this one
