Commercial description

Coal Pit ‘Tiwha’ Pinot Noir 2014

VARIETY
100% Pinot Noir

REGION
Central Otago, New Zealand

VINEYARD
-Situated in Gibbston; the highest sub-region in the Central Otago wine region (a distinct advantage when growing Pinot Noir as cooler climates promote slow, even ripening)
-North/north-east sloping gravel terrace, elevation 420-460 metres
-Soil veneered by a silty loam of variable thickness, underlying gravel is schist dominated and weakly weathered
-Vines planted 1994 to 2001, with mix of clones on own roots for added complexity and balance, fruit from our Coal Pit vineyard typically yields intensely aromatic wines with strong minerality
-Rigorous fruit thinning optimised fruit quality and a long dry autumn combined with no disease pressure extended the hang time
-Grapes hand-harvested from Coal Pit’s Gibbston vineyard on 29th April once optimum flavour and maturity of seed and skin tannins was reached
-Cropped at 4 tonnes/hectare

VINIFICATION & MATURATION
-Winemaking philosophy is for minimal intervention to preserve fine aromatics and flavours, in own on-site winery
-Fruit 100% de-stemmed directly to tank for minimal handling
-Cold soak of 3 days to enhance colour development, followed by fermentation at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks
-Malolactic fermentation in barrel (in the following spring) to ensure further integration of oak and wine characters
-Aged in French oak barrels for 12 months (40% new) prior to blending and bottling on 20th April 2015

TASTING NOTE
A sophisticated nose of violets, wild herbs, game and spice leads to an opulent fruit filled palate of morello cherry and plums with supple tannins. Classic Gibbston elegance.
